A
psychiatrist is a physician who is a specialist in psychiatry; he/she
specializes in the diagnosis of mental disorders. Psychiatrists are the
specialists who are involved in evaluating patients to determine whether or not
the symptoms of their patients are the result of a physical illness, or it is a
combination of physical & mental illness, or it is purely a psychiatric
illness.
To
be confirmed the psychiatrists may employ a psychiatric examination, a physical
exam, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), brain imaging (computerized tomography
or CT/CAT scan) & positron emission tomography (PET) scanning &blood
laboratory to detect the illness of their patients.
Psychiatrists
prescribe medicine & may also use psychotherapy, although a large number of
individuals do medical management & refer to a psychologist or another specialist
person on weekly basis to bimonthly psychotherapy.
Many
times we have seen that rape victims also being treated by psychiatrists so
that they can be brought back in the mainstream of life after they have
recovered from their state of shock & illness, psychiatry can also be used
to cure delinquent criminals who are serving sentence in juvenile jails.
Psychiatry today has become very advanced & is able to cure most of the
illnesses of the patients.
